Service Learning

The Service Learning program at the UW School of Medicine aims to enrich medical education by cultivating skills that address the health needs of underserved communities. We seek to foster the joy of service in students who are preparing for lives of civic and social responsibility as healthcare providers in an increasingly diverse and complex global society.

Within the Service Learning program, there are 3 main branches we target: Mentorship, Advocacy, and Clinical Outreach.

Idaho WWAMI Service Learning is uniquely structured to serve the needs of our site. The Service Learning Advisory Committee (SLAC) Representatives report monthly to the entire SLAC committee, made up faculty and staff of the UW School of Medicine and student representatives from each site within the WWAMI region. They work to share what is going on within Idaho WWAMI Service Learning, review applications for new projects within the WWAMI region, and facilitate applications for new projects from Idaho to be presented to the SLAC for approval of funding and implementation.

The Community Outreach Coordinators spearhead all clinical outreach projects within Idaho WWAMI. They work closely between the SLAC representatives and the student leads for each clinical outreach project at our site. They ensure that proper procedures are being followed, facilitate volunteer trainings, and assist the student leads in making sure each project is meeting both the needs of the students and the needs of the communities we serve.

The student leaders over each project work hard to ensure that students are able to access service learning opportunities and that each project is running smoothly with the requirements for operation set by the UW School of Medicine Service Learning program.

Contact information for the SLAC Representatives and the Community Outreach Coordinators can be found on the contact page. Contact information for the student leaders of each project can be found on each project’s page on this website.
